One of the world’s most innovative live music experiences the Red Bull Culture Clash will storm its way onto the Orlando Stadium stage on 23 September 2017.

The event is all about South African Urban Cultural Music, the world’s biggest musical battle hits South Africa. First originating in the UK, Red Bull Culture Clash is a musical battle that sees four crews competes against each other with the winner decided by the volume of the crowd responses. Think about this way four simultaneous stages/concerts with each act vying for your attention by dissing the next and pulling out a bag of tricks and special guests. Who’s on show?

The show comprises of four stages, each featuring a different crew representing different genres. These crews battle for the title of Red Bull Culture Clash winner. Representing the hip hop stage is the prince of SA hip-hop AKA, while Dj Tira’s crew will be on show to represent house. Nigerian dancehall sensation Patoranking will be representing Afrobeat while local legends Admiral and Jahseed round up the roster by representing dancehall. So how does it work? Red Bull Culture Clash is split into four rounds: A crew’s set in each round last between five and 15 minutes: synchronize your watches. A countdown clock will appear on the main screen 10 seconds before the end of each set. When the time is up, sound will fade out, then cut.

Crews are actively encouraged to play custom-made dub plate specials and introduce their (secret) guests anytime during the event. However, in the final round, its dubs, remixes and live performances only. No regular records whatsoever.

No crew is allowed to repeat any sound. If a crew repeats a tune played earlier in the night, they’re disqualified from that round, so listen well. The only exception is if the record is explicitly announced as “counteraction” How the rounds work Round 1: Pressure Drop 10 minutes per crew. Time to check your levels, misc., watches and selection clash is coming! DJs take the temperature of the crowd and then turn it up a notch. Round 2: The Selector 15 minutes per crew. DJs play any style, and crews are judged purely on tune selection. Knowledge is king. Round 3: Sleeping With the Enemy 10 minutes per crew. Crews twist it, playing an opponent’s style of music. Big test. The mighty may fall. Round 4: Armageddon 2 x 5 minutes per crew. Clashing crews pull out their biggest anthems. This is the final round, so double points and double daring! Note: The live stream audience will decide who has the right to play the very last set. How will the crews be judged?

A round is won by crowd reaction, pure and simple, audience decides who will be the best in terms of originality, performance, song selection, and energy. The final call rests with the hosts. At the end of the night they will decide upon the winner of Red Bull Culture Clash, based on noise amongst the audience. Too close to call? A decibel reader brings the science. Live stream viewers cannot influence who wins a round. But they can support their favorite crew by making noise online and unlocking extra special secret weapons for them. What kind of music will I hear on the night?

Crews will play their own music and the music of others – see the breakdown of rounds for more details. Everyone will bring out special (surprise) guests and play exclusive, one-night-only dubplate specials (more on that later). The Culture Clash Dictionary What is a "dubplate special"?

A dubplate special is a song recorded by a crew that only they can play. It’s usually an alteration of a well-known hit record, with a new beat or special lyrics praising the crew (and dismissing others). A “custom dub” is a dubplate special that was recorded _specifically for the night_. It references the clash it is played in and the other crews taking part in it.

What is a "replay"? Every record can only be played once during Red Bull Culture Clash. This is to ensure the highest level of entertainment, and put the crews’ originality and spontaneity to a test. If a crew repeats a song that has been played earlier on the night, it’s called a “replay” and leads to disqualification from the round. The disqualification is determined and announced by the hosts. What is a "counteraction"?

A counteraction is the only way that a record can be played more than once during Red Bull Culture Clash. It’s very easy: If Crew An already played ‘X’, Crew B can only play ‘X’ if they somehow alter the record (remix, dubplate, live performance) and announce it as a direct counteraction. Any other replay leads to disqualification from the round For more about Red Culture Clash visit https://www.redbull.com/za-en/events/Red%20Bull%20Culture%20Clash%202017
