Tell us who you are...
I'm originally Andile Ngubeni, a young man who grew up in KZN (Estcourt) and came to JHB in 2007 for school. I started rapping 2011 when I was doing grade 10. My hustle is about giving people good stories and messages in a creative way and of course being able to put something on the table at the end of the day.
What brought about the rapping?
To be honest it just came to my mind that I can do it too, judging from listening to kasi rappers.
I see. So who did you listen to that made you feel that way?
People like Siya Shezi, Feezy and Prokid. It’s all in the name of bringing something unique into the game.
I'm glad you touched on that. What makes you unique? A lot of new cats are coming in on that kasi flavour tip because corporate bullies are dictating that's what the flavour of the month is. What do you say about that?
The word selection is different from other rappers; I don’t usually talk about kasi life coz I grew up in rural areas so whatever I say must reveal my true being. I always try to sound traditional and my flow isn’t created from someone's flow...I create it from the start, same applies to stories
So I can presume that Nkabi Rap is what you identify with..?
Exactly! See Nkabi Rap is a new genre categorised under Hip Hip...it focuses on tradition in a way that all the stories we write are written in Vernac. This is a genre and lifestyle. We don’t live like other rappers. When they say hommie, my nigga, etc. we say "Inkabi yam". We are about addressing everything that happens in rural areas in simplicity
So similar to Motswako?
I was gon say something if I knew more about Motswako
You're forgiven. Tell me how it was winning the Red Bull 10k challenge at BTTC this year..? Was that something you wanted to check off your list?
It was a dream coming true man. I wanted it ever since I knew about it which is 3yrs back but I knew I wasn’t ready till this year
You were amazing. As you know, we've shot footage of the entire thing. Where to from here?
We’re working on my first project that’s gonn be called "Indaba Yam" that’s what I’m currently focusing on but a lot is about to happen. New sound, new flows with every track carrying a story, never mind whether it’s a banger or whether it’s conscious.
We certainly wish him well!
