Pass Me The Mic Hip Hop Tour is a society that's causing gentle waves right under our noses. The movement started in 2013 and has such an avid following that I'm upset with myself for not knowing that it was there... Nevertheless, I've thankfully caught up and I'm here to make sure that you do too.
Founded by the young Cool Jones, this tour travels city to city and does exactly what it describes itself to do. When we arrived at the event, rappers of all ages, all ethnicities, from various cities had gathered and were psyching themselves up for their opportunities on stage. I grabbed the front row and a drink and waited, not having the slightest clue what to expect. I must say, being the only ladies there at the time did kind of make me feel out of place, but well, you know how ladies are. They arrived albeit a little later. I guess they wanted things to jump off first.
The venue this time around was Da Dawn Lounge in Dawn Park. This little gem decieved me. Located in a shopping centre that has seen many many days, add to that a gang of hooded, jeans riding low rappers hanging around the entrance? I was sure it'd be something out of the ditches of gnarliest ghetto. So wrong!

What stood out for me were the amount of rappers that had travelled as far as Sasolburg to come register and perform. There is a mic that's literally left out in the open and anyone who's feeling themselves can go ahead and grab the mic and spit over a tight beat. For free. All it takes is a request for one from the dj. The registration process takes place at the event and R30 get's you two of your original songs on stage. People rock up with their entire entourages though so go there with some support. A night well spent and yet another reminder that SA has some real talent. Definitely go check it out.
